The following morning, Mimi woke up even more determined to carry on with her private investigation âon the side.â Since she had run out of her own suspects to consider, she had a cunning plan to pick Saraâs brain.
But first and foremost, she needed a good, powerful cup of coffee.
All bundled up with an equally bundled up Baxter at her feet, Mimi left her apartment and headed for the town. The wind had settled overnight, but there was a crispy sting in the air and frost on the ground. Probably more snow on the way.
Mimi tightened her scarf and pulled the hat over her ears. Her inner sun-loving self cringed at the thought of walking for ten minutes into town, even to get the best coffee in the world.
Maybe a cup of instant brew wasnât such a bad idea?
She half-turned around to go back into the coziness of her apartment, when she spotted light in the windows of the cafe next door.
âWeâre lucky again,â she whispered to her pug. Baxter wagged his tail once.
Mimi rolled her eyes.
âHonestly, Baxter, is there anything that gets you excited?â She glared at the dog, but he didnât respond, and just kept looking ahead. Mimi sighed. What a strange dog she had.
âLetâs go,â she said and pulled the leash. Baxter followed reluctantly.
Once at the café, Mimi let Baxter off the leash, letting him attend to his morning business as she pushed the door. This time it was unlocked.
The café looked much more inviting than yesterday. Scott smiled at her from behind the counter.
âHello, Mimi,â he called. âHow do you like the new decor in the café?â
Mimi looked around. The walls were still the same creamy color, but Scott had added his own touchâwood-framed posters of bright green leafy vegetables and all sorts of colorful berries. There was a blackboard the size of a large TV screen behind Scott, with the menu.
âWhat can I get you?â Scott asked eagerly when Mimi approached the counter. âOur official grand opening isnât for a week, so Iâve got a special half-price promo.â
Mimi scanned the menu. Daniel George would have turned over in his grave if heâd seen it.
âIâd like just a plain black coffee,â Mimi said hesitantly. âIf you have it.â
âPlain black coffee?â Scott asked, giving her a careful look. âLocally roasted? Organic?â
Mimi blinked. It seemed that with Scott Thomas, buying a simple plain black coffee was never going to be the same.
âWhatever you recommend,â she said, after a moment of hesitation. It wasnât like she didnât experiment with her food or drinks.
âThis one is an excellent roast,â Scott said, and then continued talking about the coffee bean sourcing and roasting. Mimi pretended to listen while scrambling to find a polite way to wriggle herself out of this foreign conversation.
âYou are very knowledgeable,â she said eventually. âAnd very quick. When did you get the premises ready? Yesterday was the first time I even noticed you were here.â
âI had a lot of help from my friends. They came down last Friday and we did a lot last weekend.
